Please be advised that a Boil Water Advisory is immediately in effect due to a break in the main water line.
This advisory will be in effect until further notice.

Residents will be advised through our social media accounts and the Town website (Carbonear.ca)

 

Consumers are advised to bring water that you might ingest to a

rigorous rolling boil for one (1) minute.

The Town of Carbonear is seeking a Carbonear winter scene to use in our 2021 Town of Carbonear Holiday Greetings.

Appropriate artist credit will be acknowledged and an honorarium will be offered.

Photograph, textiles and paintings will be accepted for consideration.

A selection committee will review submissions & announce the chosen image in December.

Announcement of Standing Committees and External/Liaison Committees Appointment

On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, the newly elected Town of Carbonear council met to discuss Standing Committees and liaison appointments for the new Council.

Standing Committees and their terms of reference are very important to the timely moving of initiatives and operation of the Town.  A Standing Committee is a consultative body that provides direction on policy development and provides recommendations for Council’s consideration.  The decisions of all committees are subject to approval by Council.

As part of the regular Council meeting on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, the new chairs and members were announced.

This weekend we have two different sporting events taking place at the Carbonear Pool and Recreation Complex.  We’ve posted on our social media and our website as well.

The Town of Carbonear is currently accepting applications for a full-time, temporary, Coordinator to support our Welcoming Community Initiatives.

Work Hours: Full-time, 35 hours/week x 20 weeks

Hourly Rate of Pay: $16.50/hr

Position Summary:
The Welcoming Communities Initiative is a municipal driven project to address integration and retention needs in the town of Carbonear and area.  The coordinator supports the development of this project by engaging stakeholders, developing identified community initiatives, and building on diversity/inclusion training.  Members and stakeholders include, but are not limited to, schools, levels of government, professional associations, faith-based organizations, ethno-cultural organizations, and the community and social services sector.

Key duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Plan and implement identified projects including Buddy Program, Conversation Café, and others
  • Research and identify best practices and project plans that will enhance newcomers cultural and community integration and support the Welcoming Community Initiative
  • Identify, consult and collaborate with partner organizations and working groups
  • Recruit and train volunteers to assist with the project, where needed
  • Conduct evaluations and collect stories that measure and attest to the project impact in the community.

Qualifications:

–   Minimum two years of post-secondary training in community development or a related field, or equivalent experience
–   Demonstrated understanding and experience with community development processes and tools
–   Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
–   Satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record check

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation September 30, 2021

Carbonear, NL, September 23, 2021 –   On September 21, the Town of Carbonear council confirmed it will observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, 2021 to honor First Nations, Innuit and Metis survivors and their families and communities.  The Government of Canada passed legislation marking September 30 as a day to recognize and commemorate the history and legacy of residential schools as part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s’ Call to Action.

“In the spirit of reconciliation and hope, the Town of Carbonear council encourage all residents to recognize residential school survivors and their families on September 30, 2021.  I encourage all residents to show their support and learn more about the legacy of residential schools and wear orange in honour of #Everychildmatters on September 30, 2021”, says Mayor Frank Butt.

In recognition of the day the Town office and Operations and Public Works department will be closed.  The Carbonear Pool and Recreation   facility and programs will remain open.  Garbage collection will continue as scheduled.

The forecast information indicate the weather system is anticipated to track near or over the Avalon region Friday night into Saturday.

Residents are asked to
* Secure loose items around your house eg. Lawn furniture and clear drains and basins
* Trim branches and cut dead trees

This shut off will affect households south of Janes Avenue.

The shut off is expected to end at noon. (If no other unforeseen issues).

The Town of Carbonear is in receipt of an application to operate a Massage Therapy Clinic (Rehabilitative Centre/Health Spa/Fitness Gym) from 125 Columbus Drive . This application is being considered as a discretionary use in a Commercial Highway zone.

Construction work will take place on Industrial Crescent (at the intersection with Goff Avenue)
Residents accessing Industrial Crescent will need to use Powell Drive.
Please exercise caution in the area.

 

Public Notice: Nomination of Candidates

Nominations of candidates for election to the council for the municipality of Carbonear will be received between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on September 2, 2021 at the Carbonear Council Office, Council Chambers.

Nominations shall be in writing and state the name and civic address of the candidate and shall be signed by the Proposer and Seconder both of whom shall be present together with the candidate who shall sign also signifying the candidate’s acceptance.  In the event that a candidate cannot be present for a candidate’s nomination, the candidate’s proposer and seconder can complete the required form.

If the nomination is for a candidate running as a mayor in a separate election that position should be noted on the nomination form.

Every candidate shall at the time of the candidate’s nomination, deposit with the Returning Officer, the non-refundable sum of ten dollars ($10.00) for towns.

The qualifications of a candidate for election to council are as follows:

  1. Canadian citizen who is 18 years of age or older;
  2. Ordinarily resident in the municipality or area for at least 30 days prior to the date set for the commencement of the nomination period;
  3. Not in arrears of taxes or other charges payable to the municipality; and
  4. Not otherwise disqualified under the Municipal Elections Act

Road closure:
Valley Road at the intersection of Adelaide Street and Pike’s Lane will be closed to thoroughfare traffic.
Underground work is being completed in this area over the week and for the safety of the workers as well as motorists, the road will be closed.

Construction work is continuing on Highroad South and crews will need to set up detours in place as work continues. The construction zone area of Highroad South will be closed to thru traffic starting on Monday, July 26, 2021.
Access for hospital and residents will be maintained.
