Public Advisory: Adverse Weather Conditions Anticipated

Public Advisory: Adverse Weather Conditions Anticipated

  • Justice and Public Safety
  • Transportation and Infrastructure

January 9, 2023

The Provincial Government is monitoring forecast information on a weather system that is anticipated to affect the Avalon Peninsula. Heavy snowfall and high winds are forecast to begin early tomorrow morning (January 10), and will continue into tomorrow evening.

We encourage residents to follow guidance provided by officials, and to monitor the forecast for the most up-to-date information. Regional forecast information is available from Environment Canada.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure anticipates the strong winds and heavy snowfall will lead to poor visibility on some highways. Poor to near zero visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow can be expected for the eastern portion of the island.

The department recommends that motorists should:

  • Check nl511.ca or the 511 smartphone app for highway driving conditions and the Provincial Plow Tracker before travelling;
  • Check the latest Environment Canada forecasts; and
  • Slow down and drive to conditions.

Details on ferry schedules can be found on nl511.ca, the 511 app or by calling 1-833-NLFERRY (653-3779).

Visit Be Prepared for more information on emergency preparedness.

Boil Water Advisory is still in effect

BOIL WATER ADVISORY IS STILL IN EFFECT

The Boil Water Advisory is anticipated to be in effect until next week.

Repairs have been completed to the system but
mandatory testing with a satisfactory result by the provincial lab is required before the advisory can be lifted. This will be completed as soon as possible.

The notice of lifting the Boil Water Advisory will be completed through social media, the website, local radio and through the Carbonear Connect e-update.

While the advisory is in effect, consumers are reminded to continue to bring water that you might ingest to a rigorous rolling boil for one (1) minute.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Carbonear resident, Ray Johnson, along with Kevin Blackmore and Wayne Chaulk (Buddy Wasisname & the Other Fellers) on the announcement of their appointment to the Order of Canada.

The Order of Canada is how our country honours people who make extraordinary contributions to the nation.

They were recognized for their contributions to Canadian music and comedy, notably as ambassadors of Newfoundland and Labrador’s culture and heritage.

Carbonear, NL, November 16, 2022 – The Town of Carbonear has retained the services of Tract Consulting Inc. to prepare a Recreation Master Plan that will inform future planning, investment and development of recreation activities and facilities in the town. The Plan will enable Council to continue to offer residents a diverse range of recreational opportunities, ensuring a high quality of life for Carbonear residents.

First day of the new school year!

It’s the first day of the new school year!
There are excited kids, teachers, school staff & of course parents this morning!
A reminder to drivers to slow down on their travels this morning as students are heading back to school. Reduce speed in school zones & exercise caution as there is an increase of both vehicular & pedestrian traffic beforeb& after school.
Let’s make sure everyone gets to their destination safely!

Bulk Waste Collection Days:

Bulk Waste Curbside Collection Days

Bulk waste collection begins on the designated day for your area. It may take a number of days for all bulk waste items to be removed from all residences. For example, furniture may be collected one day and metals on the next day.

September 19, 2022: Carbonear (east of, & including, Bemisters Hill)

October 3, 2022: Carbonear (west of Bemisters Hill to Pondside Road & sideroads off Pondside Road)

October 17, 2022: Carbonear (south of, & including, Forest Road, London Road)

Bulk collection Guidelines:

  • Place items at your own curb by 7 a.m. on your designated bulk waste collection day. Only your household’s items should be at the curb.
  • Place bulk items next to your garbage box or where waste is normally placed for weekly collection.
  • Separate metal items from other bulk waste (such as furniture).
  • Do not stack items.
  • Waste must be accessible and boxes free of snow / debris
  • All items must be bagged or bundled and tied. Scattered or loose items will not be collected.
  • Individual items must not exceed a maximum of 22 kg (50 lb).
  • A maximum of 226 kg (500 lbs) or one pick-up load (whichever is less) will be collected from each household.
  • It may take a few days for bulk items to be collected from all residences. Not all materials will necessarily be collected at once—for example, furniture may be collected on day one and metal collected the following day. It’s still important that all material is placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the day collection begins.

Updated Schedule of events for Carbonear Days!

Notice: Extreme Fire Hazard conditions

As many are aware, current conditions of high temperatures and lack of rainfall have increased the fire hazard levels across the region.

The Town of Carbonear are advising residents to exercise extreme caution at this time.  Due to the unusually dry conditions, the Town of Carbonear will not be issuing any open air fire permits.

The Town asks residents to refrain from the use of fireworks, fire pits and use of various types of outdoor fireplaces.  Additionally, please be fire safe when using propane devices i.e. Firepits and barbeques.  Keep a fire extinguisher or water hose close by just in case.
