Public Advisory: Adverse Weather Conditions Anticipated

The Provincial Government is monitoring forecast information on a weather system that is anticipated to affect several regions of the province over the coming days (January 4-6).

This storm is expected to bring a combination of strong gusty winds, rainfall and snowfall, along with higher-than-normal water levels to parts of the northeast coast on Sunday. There is a moderate probability of localized low-level flooding along coastal areas from Ferryland to Cape Freels on the eastern and northeastern coastline.

Heaviest snowfall is most likely to occur over Newfoundland areas late Saturday night and/or during the day Sunday, while heaviest snowfall is most likely in southeastern Labrador from later in the day Sunday until Monday (January 6). Visibility will be poor at times in heavy snow, strong winds and occasional blowing snow.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the forecast from Environment Canada for the most up-to-date information.

Similar storms in the past have caused localized low-level coastal flooding, travel disruptions, isolated power outages and wind damage. Residents are asked to take steps to ensure their own personal safety. Homeowners should secure loose items around their properties (Christmas décor and lights), ensure sump pumps are in working order, and safeguard important documents.

Motorists are reminded to check driving condition reports via the NL511 mobile app, nl511.ca or call 511. Always drive according to the conditions in your area, and never cross floodwaters on foot or in a vehicle as the water may be deeper than it looks.

Last night was the official launch of the Toy Tree at the Trinity Conception Square.

Donations for the Toy Tree are accepted at the TC Square from now up until December 23rd.

Councillor Chris O’Grady was on hand to present a donation on behalf of the Town of Carbonear at the opening.

Breastfeeding Support Group beginning this Tuesday, November 19, 2024

Remembrance Day

The Carbonear Remembrance ceremony hosted by the Carbonear Legion Branch 23 will be held on Monday, November 11, 2024.

The parade will form by 10:15 am in the Conception Bay Regional Community Centre parking lot and start the march at 10:30 to the Cenotaph.

The Ceremony will start at the Cenotaph at 11:00 am.

The Town Office will be closed on Monday, November 11, 2024 in observance of Remembrance Day.

The Town office will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.

PAVING NOTICE: Adelaide Street

The contractor has been on site preparing the section of Adelaide Street for paving (Cross Roads to Powell’s Supermarket access off Adelaide Street).  Paving will take place tomorrow, Friday, November 8, 2024.

During paving, traffic will be detoured with no thru traffic on Adelaide Street from Cross Roads to the Adelaide Street access to Powell’s Supermarket.

Please note, driveway access for those households in that area will be restricted during the roadwork for the day.

Contractor will be on site early morning (~7 a.m.).

Cross Roads Water, Sewer, Road Upgrades Project:

This project consists of upgrades to the street infrastructure at Cross Roads between the intersection with Pike’s Lane, at the north end, and the intersection with Pond Side Road, to the south.
New water and sanitary sewer mains and stormwater infrastructure will be installed, as well as new asphalt, curb & gutter and sidewalk- one side.

Beach Road Sewer Sizing Project:

This project consists of upgrading the sanitary sewer main at Beach Road between the intersection with Adelaide Street, at the north end, and the lift station located at the intersection with Pike’s Lane, to the south.

There is now a province wide fire ban in place.

The forest fire weather index forecast for the province tomorrow ranges from MODERATE to EXTREME for many areas. Residents are reminded open or outdoor fires are not permitted and burning permits are invalid when there is a fire ban in place.    All outdoor fires are prohibited this includes the use of backyard fire pits, charcoal barbecues, and the use of fireworks.

Operators of off-road vehicles should be vigilant when travelling in grassy and forest areas. Use a proper screening or baffling device to prevent sparks from escaping and carry a fire extinguisher with a minimum of 225 grams of ABC-class dry chemical.

Provincial fire hazard index maps are updated daily and can be viewed at the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture website.
