Solid Waste Collection Update: Area 3

Solid Waste Collection Update: Area 3

Solid waste collection in Area 3 will take place as scheduled on Friday, January 24, 2020.

They will not be collecting recycling that was not collected in Area 3 last week. Due to the storm most of Area 3 was not collected last Friday so the collectors will have additional garbage to collect in this area this week.

Recycling collection will follow the posted collection schedule.

Solid Waste Collection Update

The Town has received notification from Eastern Waste that Robin Hood Bay has been opened to commercial haulers so waste collection is going ahead per the collection schedule this week. For residents that use garbage boxes, boxes must be accessible for waste to be collected from them.

Snow Clearing Operations

The Town will have snow clearing crews working from 5 a.m. to midnight over the next few days pushing back snow where streets are narrow. Crews will be concentrating on the most heavily traveled streets first.

The Town asks residents to be patient. Your street will be completed, if required, in due course.

Due to the blizzard, solid waste collection in Area 3 was not finished on Friday, January 17, 2020 .

In addition, due to the state of emergency in the City of St. John’s, Robin Hood Bay is closed. It is not known at this time when Robin Hood Bay will reopen.

Eastern Waste Management will not be in a position to provide the town will a scheduled time for waste collection until they have further information on when Robin Hood Bay will reopen.

The Town will provide an update when further information becomes available.

Public Notice:

Residents that have their water pumped through the Bunker’s Hill Pumphouse will experience decreased water pressure.

Snow clearing equipment damaged the meter on the side of the building interrupting the power supply to the pumps.

Repairs are ongoing.

An update will be provided when further information is available on when repairs are anticipated to be completed.

Total snowfall: generally 30 to 50 cm with 50 to 70 cm possible over parts of the northeast Avalon Peninsula.

Maximum wind gusts: northerly 100 to 120 km/h, with gusts to 140 km/h along exposed areas of the coast.

Time span: early Friday morning until Saturday afternoon.

Remarks: Anyone planning travel or other weather-sensitive activities is urged to monitor forecasts and to consider alternate plans. Visibility is expected to be reduced to near zero at times with widespread blizzard conditions.

Solid Waste Collection is continuing. The collector has indicated that they will continue to collect waste throughout the day. They have experienced delays related to mechanical difficulties, weather, closures at Robin Hood Bay and additional garbage due to the Christmas season. Calls received concerning areas missed are being forwarded to the contractor for collection. The Town apologizes for any inconvenience.

The Town Council of Carbonear has adopted the Carbonear Municipal Plan Amendment No. 26, 2019 and Development Regulations Amendment No. 38, 2019.

The purpose of the amendment is to redesignate and rezone land located on the southwest side of Highroad North, north of Tyres Drung, from the Commercial and Industrial land use designations to the Residential land use designation to accommodate residential development.  A corresponding amendment to the Development Regulations will rezone the land to the Residential Medium Density land use zone.

A Public Hearing to consider objections and representations on the Municipal Plan and Development Regulations Amendments will be held at 7:00 p.m. on the 30th day of January, 2020 at the Town Council Office, Carbonear.

Anyone wishing to make an objection or representation at the Public Hearing shall, no later than 4:00 p.m., 28th, January 2020, deposit with the Town Clerk of Carbonear, two copies of a signed written statement outlining the objection or representation.  If no written objection or representation with respect to the Municipal Plan or Development Regulations Amendment are received within the time indicated, the Public Hearing may be cancelled.

The Town of Carbonear is seeking an individual to fill the full time position of Lifeguard/Instructor at the Carbonear Swimming Pool and Recreation Complex, for a leave replacement up to October 15, 2020. This position is accountable for providing and maintaining the daily support services to the operations programs and services offered by the Carbonear Swimming Pool and Recreation Department. The position reports directly to the Director of Recreation or designated supervisor.

Qualifications:

Education for this position will include a high school diploma. Red Cross WSI, LSS NLS and Standard First Aid also required. A recognized fitness certification would be an asset. A combination of education and experience acceptable to the Town of Carbonear may be considered.

Strong organizational and administrative skills including the ability to communicate with the public and program participants in a polite, tactful, diplomatic and respectful manner are also required. Demonstrated leadership and analytical skills would be an asset. A clear letter of conduct is also required.

A complete job description, as well as information pertaining to rate of pay, benefits and other related information will be provided to candidates selected for an interview.

This is a unionized position and compensation will be as per the collective agreement.

16th Annual Sam Jeffers Memorial Ride – Saturday, September 21, 2019

On Saturday September 21st, 2019 it will be the 16th running of the annual Constable Sam Jeffers Memorial Ride from St. John’s to Carbonear/Freshwater via Whitbourne (Monty’s North Atlantic) and the New Harbour-Tilton barrens. Once again, this special Motorcycle Ride will be escorted by both the RNC and RCMP (please refer to Media Release below).
We have always had great support for this event especially from the local motorcycle community and the various branches of the uniformed services, and many people in eastern Newfoundland still remember that fateful day in September 1957 when Constable Sam Jeffers was knocked off of his motorcycle while on duty at Rawlin’s Cross in St. John’s.

Carbonear Triathlon and Carbonear Try-A-Tri Sunday, July 21st

Carbonear Triathlon
Beautiful Carbonear NL in July is the setting for one of the best Sprint Triathlons you’ll ever race. This point to point event starts with a 500m dip in the cool fresh water of Freshwater Pond followed by a scenic 18k bike ride back through Carbonear, up the hill, back into Freshwater and through town again finishing by the pool in Carbonear. Then a 5k run out and back through the town and 1 lap on the track brings you across the finish line. Cap off the day with a tasty steak and salad dinner at the awards reception.

Carbonear Try-a-Tri
Carbonear Try-a-Tri consists of a 300m swim, 6K bike, and 3K run. Hey Youth, let’s get involved. Put your athleticism to the test! Must be 12 years of age. For those adults who have always wanted to try!! Here’s your opportunity, Triathlon experience at a shorter distance! Register individually or as a Team (2 or 3 members). Join us for the awards banquet and enjoy a wonderful Steak BBQ.

Discretionary Development Proposal

                                                                             

The Town of Carbonear is in receipt of an application to construct a shed measuring 7.38m2 at 147 Valley Road. This will result in a total floor area of all accessory buildings on the lot measuring 151.57m2. The maximum floor area is 81m2 for a single storey accessory building. Council has the discretion to approve a total floor area of greater than the maximum

provided the lot size is greater than 1400m2 and the total lot coverage does not exceed 7% of the lot size.  For further information on the application, please contact the Town Office at 709-596-3831 or by emailing [email protected].

Water Shut Off – Harbour Rock Hill to Burnt Head Road (west access)

On Wednesday, June 26, 2019 starting at 9 a.m.

There will be a water shut off from Harbour Rock Hill to Burnt Head Road (west access) to repair a leak in the main water line.

Water service will be reinstated as soon as possible.
Those in the area should expect the water to be off for most of the day.

Downtown Revitalization Project Detour Update- Thursday, June 13, 2019

Here is your update for tomorrow, Thursday, June 13th.

Bannerman Street will be open.

At the beginning of the day, the detour will be located at Pike’s Lane. As they finish up work and move along Water Street they will open up Adelaide Street.

O’Donovan’s Lane will be closed all day tomorrow.

Clients of Medical and Physical Therapy Supplies Ltd., can notify the flagperson who will help them reach the business.

Downtown Revitalization Project Detour Update – Wednesday, June 12, 2019

The Construction crew will be working at the intersection of Bannerman Street and Water Street. Therefore, Wednesday, June 12th, Bannerman Street will be closed to traffic.

The detour will be located at Musgrave Street. A flagperson will be at the detour and local traffic will be allowed thru.

Also the construction crew will begin removing curb and sidewalk starting around the Railway Station and moving forward to Bannerman Street along Water Street. Due to this, in the morning, there will be a detour at Pike’s Lane until the crew have moved past Adelaide Street. As they move along Water Street to Bannerman Street detours will change.
