PART TIME JANITORIAL/MAINTENANCE

Carbonear Swimming Pool

The Town of Carbonear requires the services of an individual at the Carbonear Swimming Pool to complete janitorial and maintenance duties. This is a part time position where the individual would be ordinarily working less than twenty (20) hours per week scheduled between 5 pm Friday, and close on Sunday. In the absence of the Pool Technician/Facility Maintenance personnel, this position may be required to cover shifts. This position will be responsible for providing cleaning duties, dusting, removing garbage, removing snow from walkways, moving furniture and equipment as required, monitor pool chemistry and other related duties.

Qualifications:

The preferred candidate to possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Must have a minimum of a high school diploma;
Prior knowledge working in janitorial and maintenance would be an asset;
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
Dependable and cooperative;
Shows initiative and attention to detail;
Ability to communicate with the public in a respectful and effective manner;
Knowledge of the importance of public safety and safety procedures including the use of cleaning chemicals and the safe operation of cleaning equipment, materials and other tools.

The successful candidate will be required to complete required Occupational, Health and Safety Training prior to commencement of employment as well as to provide a clear certificate of conduct.

Notice from the Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department: FIRE BAN IS LIFTED.

The fire ban which was put in place for the Town of Carbonear and surrounding area has now been lifted.

Conditions are still dry and if it continues another ban maybe necessary. If you have a fire please be careful and have a water source close by in case it is needed.

Continue to monitor the Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department Facebook Page for updates in case a ban is required in the future.

Sale of Equipment

2014 Dodge RAM 2500 (Minimum bid of $2500)

2008 MultiQuip Roller (minimum bid of $200)

Equipment will be sold on an “as is, where is” basis with no warranties applicable.

HST will be applied to the successful bid. Interested bidders can obtain a tender form by emailing [email protected].

Terms of the tender form shall not be altered by bidders. Alterations, edits, additional clauses, etc shall cause the tender to be not accepted.

The preferred bidder will be the bidder with the greatest amount. If multiple bids are received for the same amount a coin toss will take place to determine the preferred bidder.

Sealed tenders will be received at the Town Office, 256 Water Street, Carbonear, until 2:00 p.m., Friday, 13 June 2025.

Bidders shall submit a $200 certified cheque with their bid for the 2014 Dodge RAM 2500, if bidding. Bidders shall submit a $50 certified cheque with their bid for the Multiquip roller, if bidding. The bid securities will be returned to all bidders upon closing the sale with the preferred bidder. If the preferred bidder withdraws their bid after tender close, then the preferred bidder will be disqualified and their bid security forfeit. The sale will move to the next preferred bidder.

Equipment may be viewed at the Town Depot at 1 Pikes lane (near leaf composting site) in Carbonear between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday until the tender closing date.

The winning bidder will be responsible for licensing and registration with ServiceNL.

The Town of Carbonear does not bind itself to accept the highest or any tender.

Bulk Waste Collection will be collected during the week beginning

**FIRE BAN***

As of 3:20 pm this afternoon the Provincial Fire Index has been upgraded to Very High.

Due to this rating effective Immediately there is a FIRE BAN. This ban is in effect until Tuesday June 3rd at which time it will be reassessed.

This ban includes all areas within the town boundaries and areas that are covered by the Carbonear Fire Department:

Town of Carbonear Welcomes New Municipal Enforcement Officer

The Town of Carbonear is pleased to announce and welcome Matthew Burke to the position of Municipal Enforcement Officer with the Town of Carbonear.

This position assumes an important role of enforcement of municipal by laws including engaging with the community to educate and create awareness specific to municipal by laws. By law compliance is achieved through education and enforcement, investigation of by law complaints, community patrols, and collaboration with police, other agencies and citizens.

Matthew has worked in security for the past 25 years and has completed various training programs in this field. He has volunteered with the RCMP for several years earning him various awards and certificates during that time. Matthew is committed to transparency and fair treatment in his role as by law enforcement officer.

These skills, Matthew’s enthusiasm and respect and pride in his hometown, will make him a valuable member of the Town of Carbonear Staff.

Today, April 28, is the National Day of Mourning.

The National Day of Mourning is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, suffered injury or illness on the job, or experienced a work-related tragedy.

The Town of Carbonear has placed a table in our lobby in front of the plaque installed by the Baccalieu Trail & District Labour Council (next to the Council Office door). The plaque was placed in memory of workers from the region who lost their lives through workplace accidents and industrial diseases.

A battery-operated tea light has been lit for each name on the plaque. Unlit candles have been placed on the table for those who would like to stop by and light a candle in memory of their loved ones who may not be recorded on the plaque.

Organizations, communities, and individuals are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. today.

The flags in front of the Conception Bay Regional Community Centre have been lowered to half mast to mourn the passing of former Deputy Mayor and councilor, Bob Moore.

Mr. Moore served on the Town of Carbonear Council for 2 terms from 1977 to 1983 in both Deputy Mayor and Councilor roles.

The Town of Carbonear congratulates Kerri Abbott on receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal. She was presented with the medal by the Honorable Ken McDonald, Member of Parliament – Avalon at the awards ceremony held on February 18th in Conception Bay South.

The recipients of this award have all been selected as they have made significant contributions to Canada, to their province and community or have made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada.

Kerri was nominated for her tremendous volunteer work in our community and beyond.

Kerri is also a valued member of the Town’s staff in her position of Economic Development & Tourism Officer and we are so very proud of her achievement.

Congratulations Kerri! Your commitment in helping others through various avenues has significantly impacted the lives of so many people and organizations in a positive manner.

You are certainly very well deserving of the King Charles III Coronation Medal.

Congratulations to Carbonear Collegiate Sentinels Mallory Hedd, Emily Pitcher, Hannah Butt, and Brianna Parsons.

This past weekend, they played in the17U Provincial Championships 2025 that took place in St. John’s and vicinity. 47 teams with over 700 coaches and athletes played in 6 venues as part of the Provincial Championships.

Their team had a second place finish!

Our next #WOWWednesday nomination is Adam Janes

Adam Janes and his family moved back to their hometown of Carbonear in August 2020. Adam not only wanted to open a massage therapy clinic in his hometown he also wanted a platform that he could use to support the community, especially athletes, as he knows the challenges that come with athlete development, especially in a rural community.

In the fall of 2023 Adam partnered with Carbonear Academy and launched the Play Ball: Softball and Baseball Development Program. Play Ball is a program that focuses on teaching youth the fundamentals of softball/baseball, in a fun and supportive environment. It takes place Sundays for three hours at Carbonear Academy. Adam’s goal for this program is to provide youth in our larger community the opportunity to develop leadership and teamwork skills, participate in physical activity and socialize with their peers in a supportive and positive environment.

In an effort to overcome challenges to participation in sport there is no fee to register for the program, if a participant does not have the necessary equipment, it will be provided for them and, the program is led completely by volunteers.

The second season of Play Ball has 72 youth registered from ages 6 – 14 years and representing 13 communities! The program has several parents/guardians that volunteer their time in addition to two local superstar softball players: Emily Underhay and Adrian Green!

We put out a call for folks to nominate people in our community who are doing great things so we can celebrate them on WOW Wednesday during the month of February.

One of the nominations we received was Julia Parsons.

Julia is well known in both the town and the region for her passion for animals and animal welfare. In 2022, Julia created New Life Rescue and Adoption Inc. It’s mandate is to work to unite people of all ages and backgrounds who share in the belief of a world where animals are free from cruel and inhumane treatment.

At the February 11, 2025 Town of Carbonear Regular Council Meeting, Thursday, February 13th was proclaimed Wear Red Canada Day.

Nadine Leduc with colleagues Stephen Czamuch and Rosemary Riciardelli were published in the newly released book ” Occupational Stress Injuries: Operational and Organizational Stressors Among Public Safety Personnel”

This book explores the stress faced by public safety professionals across an array of occupational fields, such as police, correctional officers, paramedics, and firefighters.

Nadine Leduc is a Carbonear resident and is a research assistant with the Atlantic Canada Public Safety Research and Innovation Lab at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. Nadine worked with her colleagues to present “”The Impact of Organizational Culture on the Mental Well-being of Public Safety Communicators”

Town crews will flush hydrants in the area of Forest Road and Powell Drive today, Thursday, January 16, 2025.

Jan. 13—22	North of Island Pond Brook, Southside of Carbonear including Powell Dr. to Saddle Hill; Pondside Road; London Road including connecting streets and Forest Rd.
Jan. 23-29	Areas West of the Community Centre to St. Clare Avenue
Jan. 30-Feb. 5	St. Clare Ave. and areas between Chapel Hill & Crocker’s Cove
NOTE: The schedule is weather-dependent and subject to unforeseen repairs. During this time some discoloration and reduction in water pressure may occur. Residents are asked to refrain from washing clothes and other related activities when flushing is taking place in your area. If you notice discoloration, please run the cold water tap (preferably one without a screen such as in the bath tub) until the water clears to remove any sediment that may have entered their service lines during the flushing in their area. Branches/Tree limbs must be tied in bundles less than 1.5 m (4 ft) ,less than 20 kg (45 lbs)

The candidate should have the following certifications and experience:

Class 5 Drivers license
Class 9 (Air Brake endorsement)
Class 8 (Heavy Equipment Operator)
Experience operating heavy equipment and dump truck.
Experience in snow clearing with heavy equipment.

Experience in general maintenance of heavy equipment and dump trucks
Able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends

Public Advisory: Adverse Weather Conditions Anticipated

The Provincial Government is monitoring forecast information on a weather system that is anticipated to affect several regions of the province over the coming days (January 4-6).

This storm is expected to bring a combination of strong gusty winds, rainfall and snowfall, along with higher-than-normal water levels to parts of the northeast coast on Sunday. There is a moderate probability of localized low-level flooding along coastal areas from Ferryland to Cape Freels on the eastern and northeastern coastline.

Heaviest snowfall is most likely to occur over Newfoundland areas late Saturday night and/or during the day Sunday, while heaviest snowfall is most likely in southeastern Labrador from later in the day Sunday until Monday (January 6). Visibility will be poor at times in heavy snow, strong winds and occasional blowing snow.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the forecast from Environment Canada for the most up-to-date information.

Similar storms in the past have caused localized low-level coastal flooding, travel disruptions, isolated power outages and wind damage. Residents are asked to take steps to ensure their own personal safety. Homeowners should secure loose items around their properties (Christmas décor and lights), ensure sump pumps are in working order, and safeguard important documents.

Motorists are reminded to check driving condition reports via the NL511 mobile app, nl511.ca or call 511. Always drive according to the conditions in your area, and never cross floodwaters on foot or in a vehicle as the water may be deeper than it looks.
