Sunday, May 17, 2026, was proclaimed Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) Awareness Day in Carbonear

At the Regular Council Meeting earlier this week, Sunday, May 17, 2026, was proclaimed as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) Awareness Day.

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) is a type of tumor that starts in the brain stem and controls breathing, nerves, and muscles, which can cause problems with everyday functions.  Brain tumors are one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in children; and,

DIPG is the most common malignant brain tumor found in children, with over 75 percent of brainstem tumors being DIPG.

Most people are unaware that DIPG is the leading cause of brain tumour deaths in children, often not finding out about this disease until they know someone whom it affects

DIPG currently remains incurable, despite decades of clinical trials
