BUDGET 2022 – Town of Carbonear Budget – No Tax Increases

 At a Special Meeting of the Town Council of Carbonear held on Tuesday, December 21, the 2022 Budget was presented by Finance & Administration Committee Chair, Chris O’Grady. Councillor O’Grady stated that “Adapting to COVID 19 continues to be a challenge and the Town of Carbonear, on behalf of its residents, would like to express thanks to all of the businesses, government boards and agencies, service groups and volunteers who continued to work hard every day to make our residents lives as normal as possible.” “We are pleased to announce that this budget will be attained without any increases in the tax rates”.

While delivering the details of the budget, he took the opportunity to recognize the invaluable service provided by town staff and the volunteers, including the volunteer fire department.

The largest expenditure is in Transportation Services with a projected expenditure of $2,354,358.  The condition of the Town’s roads continues to the top priority of residents.  This budget includes operating expenditure amounts for asphalt of $600,000 and $60,000 for curb and sidewalks and replacement equipment.  In excess of $4 M has been submitted in MCW applications with applicable funds budgeted for the town’s share of funding in anticipation of approval.

The total budget for recreational facilities and cultural services is $1,269,706.  Funds have been allocated for equipment and maintenance for the 2022 Under 20 Softball Nationals being hosted at the recreation complex in 2022.  Funds for other upgrades and maintenance are also included for the recreational facilities.  In addition, funds for the completion of a Recreation Master Plan are included.

The budget for Environmental Health is $733,900.  Residents are encouraged to continue to participate in curbside recycling and use the leaf and grass clippings composting site to reduce costs and environmental impacts.  Funds are allocated to complete a Waste Water Study for treatment of effluent to comply with the Federal Wastewater Effluent Regulations.

The total budget for Fire Protection is $119,655.  This includes funds for operation and maintenance of the fire department including new equipment and honorarium for the volunteer firefighters.

Council and staff will continue to investigate ways to attract more businesses and make Carbonear a great place to live, work and play.  $304,242 has been allocated to Planning and Development.

The Town continues to offer an interest adjustment to assist residents whose combined family income is below $50,000.

The Council is committed to maintaining growth and development for the Town of Carbonear providing the many amenities and services our residents deserve.  The Town of Carbonear is truly a wonderful place to live, work and play.  We look forward to the year ahead.
